The garbage disposal hums or won't turn
Safety first
- Switch it off immediately; don't keep trying.
- Never put your hand inside, even with power disconnected.
- Disconnect power before using tools or clearing anything.
Fix it nowEight steps
- Turn the disposal switch and faucet off.A stalled motor can overheat and trip its overload.
- Unplug with dry hands; if hardwired, turn its clearly identified breaker off.Disconnect power; never remove panel covers or touch wet electrical equipment.
- Shine a flashlight inside; remove visible objects using long-handled tongs, never fingers.Tools keep hands away from grinding surfaces.
The other five steps
- If manual confirms bottom socket, gently rock correct wrench until freely rotating.Use only the model-approved socket and wrench; never force movement.
- Remove wrench; retrieve loosened debris with tongs; clear tools; replace any removed splash guard.Loose tools and debris can cause injury during testing.
- Let motor cool per manual; with switch off, press its reset button once. Many models need 3–5 minutes; reset location and procedure vary.
- Keep everyone clear of sink opening; restore power, then run cold water.Cold water carries ground waste through the drain.
- Test briefly; if humming persists, switch off, disconnect power, and call a plumber.Persistent humming or another trip means stop, not repeated resets.
When to stop
Stop and get a plumber if:
- Burning smell, sparks, smoke, or flames: stop. For active smoke or fire, leave and call 911.
- Water leaks onto the cord or outlet: don't touch wet electrical equipment; get professional help.
- Cannot safely disconnect power, confirm the correct wrench method, or turn the mechanism gently: call a plumber.
- Still hums or won't run after one clearing/reset attempt: leave power disconnected; call a plumber.
- Reset or breaker trips again: leave power disconnected; call a plumber. Wiring or outlet faults need an electrician.
