The fridge isn't cooling
Safety first
- Keep fridge and freezer doors closed except for necessary checks.
- Prepare an ice-filled cooler to protect still-safe food.
- Never taste food to check safety.
Fix it nowEight steps
- Check an appliance thermometer; note temperature and when cooling failed.Food needs 40°F or below; touch cannot confirm safety.
- Move still-safe perishables into an ice-filled cooler maintained at 40°F or below.Protect food before troubleshooting; keep other doors closed.
- Discard meat, milk, eggs, and leftovers above 40°F for two hours.Unknown warm time: discard. Never taste food to check safety.
The other five steps
- Check lights and any safely accessible plug; avoid wet or damaged connections. No lights may indicate lost power. Never use extension cords.
- Enable cooling; set fridge near 37°F and freezer at 0°F.Follow your manual for controls or disabling demo mode.
- Move food away from interior vents; leave room for airflow.Blocked vents prevent cold air circulation.
- Clear door obstructions; wipe dirty gaskets with warm, soapy water.Doors must close fully and seal without gaps.
- Close doors; call an appliance technician if cooling stays absent or temperatures rise.Keep food protected elsewhere while waiting for service.
When to stop
Stop and get a appliance technician if:
- Smoke or flames: leave immediately and call 911 from outside.
- Burning smell, sparks, hot outlet, or damaged cord: stop; avoid touching connections. Call an electrician now.
- Heavy frost blocks interior vents: call an appliance technician. Never chip ice or use a hair dryer.
- Repeated clicking with no cooling: call an appliance technician; do not open equipment covers.
- Cooling stays absent after these checks: arrange appliance service now; do not wait with perishables inside.
